Basque Health Cluster co-organised a practical cybersecurity workshop for the healthcare sector as part of an initiative promoted by SPRI and carried out in collaboration with ZIUR (Gipuzkoa Industrial Cybersecurity Centre), Cybasque and other key stakeholders from the Basque innovation ecosystem.
Under the title “Cybersecurity by Design in Healthcare: Integration of NIS2, CRA and MDR”, the workshop brought together companies and professionals to address the main regulatory and operational challenges arising from the new European cybersecurity framework for healthcare products and services.
Throughout the session, participants explored the implications of key regulations such as the NIS2 Directive, the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and the Medical Device Regulation (MDR). These frameworks are becoming increasingly relevant for the healthcare sector, where ensuring the security of data, systems and connected medical devices is a strategic priority.
The programme combined regulatory insights, practical tools and real-world examples, with contributions from Olatz Vidaurrazaga and Jon Churruca (SPRI), Andoni García (Seinale), María Penilla (ZIUR), Ander Galisteo (Cybertix), Daniel Aguirre (Cybasque), and Mikel Eiguren and Victoria Fernández de Trocóniz (IDOM).
Key topics included the applicability of the new regulations and the consequences of non-compliance, the CRA cybersecurity framework, examples of compliance and adaptation projects, as well as support programmes and services available to companies through SPRI and ZIUR. Participants were also introduced to continuous improvement initiatives, including cybersecurity rating models and knowledge-sharing communities.
The workshop provided an opportunity to exchange experiences, address practical questions and gain valuable insights into how organisations can prepare for the evolving regulatory landscape. It also highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration and ecosystem-wide cooperation in building a safer, more resilient and more competitive healthcare sector.
