Yesterday, 24 September 2025, we held the event ‘Data and Innovation in Health. Aligning the Basque Health Ecosystem for the Digital Future’ at BAT | B Accelerator Tower, a gathering that brought together leaders, experts and representatives from the Basque healthcare sector to discuss the crucial role that data and innovation play in the transformation of healthcare.

The day began with speeches by Joseba Inchaurraga, President of Ibermática Fundazioa, and Asier Albizu, President of Basque Health Cluster. Next, the Basque Government’s Minister of Health, Alberto Martínez Ruíz, shared his vision of the challenges and opportunities facing the sector in the context of digitalisation.

The first round table, moderated by Xabier Eroa, Director of Health at Ayesa, addressed Digital Transformation in Healthcare. Processes/Data in day-to-day healthcare provision and assistance, focusing on processes and the use of data in healthcare provision and assistance. Inés Gallego, Javier Garate, Álvaro Gómez–Meana and Iratxe Ijalba participated, sharing experiences and case studies on how digitalisation improves efficiency and patient care.

After a brief coffee break and networking session, María Aguirre, Head of Health and Social Healthcare Transition at SPRI, gave an overview of the biohealth industry in the Basque Country.

The second round table discussion then began, focusing on collaborative innovation in digital health, moderated by Pedro de la Peña. Joseba Laka, Leire Francés, Mercedes Ramas, Ane Saez, Lorea Mendoza and Iban Arriola shared and discussed how collaboration and joint capacity building can transform the healthcare system.

The day ended with closing remarks by Itziar Cuenca, General Director of Ibermática Fundazioa, highlighting the importance of dialogue, cooperation and knowledge exchange in building a more efficient and digitised healthcare ecosystem.

The event was a resounding success, allowing participants to hear diverse opinions from experts and learn first-hand about the current situation of the sector in the Basque Country. Solid foundations were laid for a digital future in healthcare, where innovation and the strategic use of data will be the main drivers of change.
